Joe Iacobellis named 2008-2009 CCAA athletic director of the year

(NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C.)–Capilano University’s Athletics and Recreation manager, Joe Iacobellis, has been named the 2008-09 Athletic Director of the Year by the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association.

Each year, the CCAA honours an athletic director for leadership and commitment to excellence. The award was presented at this year’s annual general meeting at MacEwan College in Edmonton, Alberta on Monday, June 8.

Joe’s contributions to the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association and CCAA over the past 20 years have been outstanding. Whether it’s acting as a CCAA convenor, a tournament chair for numerous BCCAA and CCAA championships, or by developing an elite program at Capilano by setting high athletic and academic standards, Caps athletics programs and services have excelled under Joe’s leadership.

Under his direction, Blues athletics has won 48 BCCAA championships, 11 CCAA championships and 10 Coach of the Year awards since 1974. On the academic side of things, there have been 28 CCAA Academic All-Canadians since 1996 awarded to Capilano University, 40 BCCAA Academic Excellence awards since 2002 and 53 CCAA All-Canadians.

“Joe is a tireless individual whose has dedicated well over 30 years to the development of young athletes at various levels of competition,” said his nominator, Milt Williams, sports information director at Capilano University. “Over the past 20 years as manager of Athletics and Recreation at Capilano University, Joe has played a crucial role in not only the development, but also the advancement of athletic programs for men and women both locally and provincially.

“He has a ‘Midas Touch’ when it comes to the longevity and success of the school’s athletics program both at home and abroad,” Milt added. “Though he has fostered success in the sports arena, he is first and foremost an educator; someone who is committed to helping young athletes reach their full potential both on and off the field.”

Over the years, Joe has served as a past CCAA national soccer convener and was also the CCAA representative for the BCCAA. Joe had been a BCCAA soccer convener for 13 years, was the volleyball convener for six years, and the disciplinary chair person for the last three years. He has also served the BCCAA in the capacity of vice president – technical for four years and tournament coordinator for both CCAA and BCCAA as tournament hosts.

Joe has developed endowment funds and athletic scholarships for student athletes and also assists students in academic affairs. Further to these accomplishments, he assisted in the design, building, fund raising and implementation of the Sportsplex facility at Capilano College in 1990.

Other notable accomplishments include:

  • Aggregate Trophy Award – Athletic department with the greatest accumulated aggregate points in the BCCAA:  2004-05, 2003-04, 2002-03, 1986-87
  • 2000 Unicole Cup Award – Department with the greatest improvement in aggregate points in the BCCAA
  • 1974-1999 Quarter Century Award – Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Supremacy
  • 1974-1999 Quarter Century Award – Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association Men’s Soccer Supremacy

Joe has won 11 BCCAA provincial championships, two Coach of the Year Awards, and three CCAA championships as head coach:
