(NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C.)–Capilano University’s School of Business has joined an exclusive group of Canadian universities by having an undergraduate accounting program accredited by the Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA).

“We’re extremely excited and proud about receiving accreditation from the CMA,” said Graham Fane, Capilano University’s dean of the Faculty of Business. “This was a lengthy in-depth self assessment and internal audit process and the successful result is a testament to our outstanding faculty, innovative approaches to course design and delivery, and superb student performance.”

Beginning in 2000, CMA Canada implemented an accreditation process to recognize institutions that offer quality educational programs according to prescribed standards. The CMA accreditation program offers academic institutions a measurement process that is based on self-evaluation coupled with evaluation by CMA Canada.

“The accreditation of the Bachelor of Business Administration program at Capilano University demonstrates the University’s commitment to excellence and their ability to maintain rigorous standards set out by CMA Canada,” said Joy Thomas, president and CEO of CMA Canada. “In addition, accrediting programs enables CMA Canada and academic institutions to work together to enhance the development of management accounting knowledge and practices in the global marketplace.”

CMA Canada is the first professional accounting organization in North America to accredit programs at leading universities. These programs, which provide complete coverage of the CMA Competency Map Entrance Requirements, equip students with in-depth knowledge and skills in management accounting, financial accounting, financial management and taxation, strategic management, and risk management and governance. These skills are required for mastering the advanced concepts covered in CMA Canada’s Strategic Leadership Program, leading to the prestigious CMA designation.

“There are many benefits to accreditation,” Fane said. “For example, CMA accreditation signals to employers, the accounting profession and to the government that our program and our graduates meet a high quality standard. Second, it allows Capilano University to attract top students who are interested in the CMA designation. And third, it provides our CMA aspirants with tangible benefits, such as an exemption for the first part of the CMA Entrance Examination.”

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting with a minimum grade point average of 75 per cent are exempt from writing the CMA Entrance Examination. This select group of students will enter directly into the Strategic Leadership Program, the last step required to obtain the CMA designation.

The Capilano University School of Business offers a choice of flexible and affordable full-time and part-time business programs. This includes a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree and focused one-year, two-year and three -year business certificate and diploma options. Students can easily tailor their program to meet their goals and fit their schedules. They can choose to pursue studies in General Business Administration, Retail Marketing, Accounting, Human Resource Management, Sales and Marketing, and International Business – all with the option of laddering into the BBA degree.
